    Judges 7

The LORD’s angel appeared to him there and said, “The LORD is with you, brave and mighty man!” Gideon said to him, “If I may ask, sir, why has all this happened to us if the LORD is with us? What happened to all the wonderful things that our fathers told us the LORD used to do–how he brought them out of Egypt? The LORD has abandoned us and left us to the mercy of the Midianites.” Then the LORD ordered him, “Go with all your great strength and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I myself am sending you.” Gideon replied. “But Lord, how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least important member of my family.”

Went to a local flee market today to pick up some random items I’ve been looking for. They were hosting a gun show. While I was there I got into a conversation with a retired US Air Force veteran (joined in 1947). This man was a type of equipment specialist who flew in a spy plane from Alaska as close to Russia as possible after WW II (went all over the world in his 23 years). He told me that by analyzing how much Krypton gas was in the air, one could determine how much Plutonium a country had, and thus, how close they were to developing nuclear weapons.

The man he replaced on those missions was part of the first few teams who came back to America saying, “They’ve got the bomb.”

I ended up buying a nice holster and some hollow point ammo from him (cut me a great deal), we shook hands and I thanked him for his service. He motioned to me and my father, who was also there, and said, “We busted our a**** because we knew what we were doing would ensure the safety of the United States of America. You guys are going to have to do it next, so get with it. Learn to shoot.” To this, I replied, “That’s why we’re here.”

My heart pounded as I walked away. Here was a man who saw the dawn of the longest (and most dangerous) military stand off in the history of the world! He and his buddies were constantly thinking about someone in the Kremlin with their finger on the button just waiting for an excuse to let them fly (of course, they thought the same of us as well) and evaporate their home.

His OTHER buddies had just finished helping drive back Germany and Japan.

Now he’s placing the fate of Old Glory in MY hands?! 😯

I’ve talked to a lot of veterans over the years who served in nearly every major war from WW II-Iraq. Almost all of them, after discussing what they went through and what they’ve done for the country, the blood they shed and horrors they endured for a generation that wasn’t even born yet (or still in diapers), pull me aside, and say something like, “Our nation’s in trouble, and you have to fix it.”

I feel…quite honored to have that much faith placed in me, some kid, by such heros.

Still kind of dazed by the whole affair…and pondering the immortal question, like Gideon: “How can I?”

Am I the only one here to receive such a charge?
