I think most people don’t understand the difference between a martial arts system that trains in combatives vs one that trains in self-defense. Combatives is all about applying excessive force, usually applied in a war time setting. Self-defense based systems are about learning when and how to apply a reasonable level of force to justifiably defend yourself in a functional society.

Both skill sets have their place and application, but I too often see people wanting to learn self-defense by taking a combatives system. There is a crossover on skill sets but they are not inclusive. Most people don’t realize or stop to think about this. When we discuss the effectiveness of a system you have to take into account the objective.

    Thoughts?
