I have come to the realization that a gun is a necessity for protection and the ability to hunt may someday save the lives of my children. I have a spouse who is very opposed to this idea, so a hand gun for defense is out of the question, but I do have the go ahead to start hunting. I think this might help get her more comfort with the idea of guns being in the house.

I don’t want to spend a fortune and am looking for a relatively inexpensive rifle for hunting deer. This seems to be a very knowledgable forum so I figured I would get a second opinion. From what I have read it seems a good start would be a Remington 783 bolt action rifle and 3-9×40 scope for a total of about $350. I have three big questions here.

    1. Is there something better for the money?
    2. I have no idea what caliber I need.
    3. Is it worth an extra hundred dollars to get something stainless steal, is rust that big of an issue?
