Foraging in South Dakota is my love. Still consider myself a newbie though. Each year I forage for Rose hips of both the prairie rose variety and the bush roses we find along lakes. I also forage for wild asparagus. I’m also one to hunt for wild onions and arrow root. I began foraging for wild sage this year also. Also foraged for cattail, horsetail fern, wild mushrooms & juniper berry.

I’ve been working to identify, more than forage for many wild plants in my area just as a precaution. I’ve learned to identify burdock, plantain. I’ve studied how to harvest box elder sap also (which is similar to maple syrup, but lighter).

Wondering if there are others in the Dakota prairie who have foraged wild foods?
