I thought I’d share a new product I saw in Popular Science magazine in the March issue. According to the article, the fuel cell is a portable charger that generates enough energy to power a USB-enabled phone once a day for two weeks. Unlike other portable power sources, which store energy in batteries, the Nectar runs on butane. When a user plugs his phone into the USB port, a replaceable butane cartridge releases fuel into the cell. The process can run as hot as 1,830*F, so the engineers built a network of insulating silicon-nitride tubes to keep the exterior cool. When the butane cartridges are empty they need to be replaced as they are not refillable -$10. The charger by Lilliputian Systems comes out in May for $300.
