Have thyme, 2 different basils, chives, mint, and 2 heirloom tomatoes started in a hydroponic setup right now, and the dill and parsley should be sprouting soon.

Ever heard of “aqua-ponics” my parents are really excited to try it. you hook your hydro- plants up to a fish tank, the fish water feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water. Then you eat the fish. There’s a guy down the road from us who has a set-up and he demonstrates, by DRINKING the water that’s recycling back into the fish tanks. interesting, no?

It’s interesting, but I havent got the room to set up that kind of system. I just take my “fish-poop water” when I do water changes in my aquarium, and use it to water my plants with. They love it!

teehee…i don’t have aquaponics or hydroponics here….i have what i call kymberponics!!! you should see some of the messes i make with making my own compost teas to feed the garden and houseplants! i save all used teabags in a bucket under the sink….and feed the garden and the plants with it. i keep all of my old SOS pads in a bucket under the sink…and feed my garden and houseplants from it! oh and the concoctions of stuff that i leave in a bucket in the solarium!!!

anyway – yes i have a bunch of microbial H1N1 growing in my house…but heck…it’s like a natural vaccination or something! oh and the garden and houseplants love it!

guess it can also be used for herbs and lettuce? 😆

Took the thyme, dill, chives, and one of the basils out of the AeroGrows today and re-potted them, and took the “baskets”, put a small peat plug in a couple of them, and put in caraway and rosemary seeds to sprout. Once I get the additional starter plugs, I’ll be starting some romaine and artichoke plants.

anybody know if a system like hydro/aero ponics is feasible with a solar off-grid power source?

I am doing aquaponics. I have had a system circulating since March of 09 and have gone thru several design and plant changes. First of all this stuff really works and can be done on any scale. Mine occupies a 10 X 12 Harbor frieght greenhouse.

here is a picture at the hieght of it’s growth last November,

I have since converted it to all spices with the exception of swiss chard. I am planning on putting in some more tomatos but I want to give everything else a chance to get settled in before the tomatos go crazy like they did last time.

Here is a pic of the fish when they were smaller. the catfish have grown quite a bit.

Thanks it has gone thru several interations but is still going strong. I really think that this has a place in future food production schemes.

    Hi,
I have an areogrow (an anniversary present), the hubby has some of the hydro equipment, not set up yet. We looking to buy a place so will set up then.
Did one batch of herbs with the areogrow, it was OK. Will use again this winter. Have herbs in the front yard right now.
