Has anyone been able to debunk the “results” of what would happen if the New Madrid fault line were to wreak havoc in a worst case scenario? Looking to move south but don’t want to be living in boat.

    Strange Happenings
The New Madrid earthquakes were the biggest earthquakes in American history. They occurred in the central Mississippi Valley, but were felt as far away as New York City, Boston, Montreal, and Washington D.C. President James Madison and his wife Dolly felt them in the White House. Church bells rang in Boston. From December 16, 1811 through March of 1812 there were over 2,000 earthquakes in the central Midwest, and between 6,000-10,000 earthquakes in the Bootheel of Missouri where New Madrid is located near the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

Close to worse case scenario would be damage for a few hundred miles.
Check out Figure 3 in this PDF File:
    Earthquake hazard, New Madrid

Maps which show inundation in areas the size of Arkansas or Mississippi are created for political gain or just to profit off of people’s panic, and rely on the gullibility of the masses to perpetuate their pet theories.

While it’s unclear what the disaster zone size will be, it will have impacts well up into the Northeast, since most of the oil and gas pipelines running up to New England will be impacted by any serious New Madrid quake.

And the directly impacted area is a major shipping hub which will cause supply chain disruptions over most of the US.

So while it’s not going to be the end of the world, it would definitely be a major SHTF for lots of folks.

I agree with what dmwalsh58 said, but the Opening Post referred to some urban legends that show ocean inundation all the way to St. Louis, or even show the Boston Mountains as an island.

I fully expect, sometime in the next dozen to hundred years or so, a major quake that will take out all the bridges and pipelines from Memphis to Hannibal MO, disrupt supply channels all across most of the U.S. and indirectly (economically) impact everyone from Beijing to Berlin.

i can’t say the exact amount of damage to structures and death toll would be when it comes to what they show in figure 3..but i do know it’d be extremely devastating on a very large scale..then add the damage to roads, rivers, landscape, etc etc.and of course, there’ll be fires.and who knows what else.people will die from injuries,in which they normally wouldn’t,on account they didn’t get the needed medical help.then there’s dehydration and starvation.
