They announced this morning that the Fitzpatrick plant in upstate New York will be closing in 2016. That is concerning when taken in consideration with the following: the closing of Vermont Yankee 12/31/2014, the announced intention to close Oyster Creek in New Jersey (2019), the closing of the Pilgrim plant in Massachusetts no later than 2019, and Governor Cuomo’s attempt to close Indian Point.

Since nuclear is the most reliable baseload power source on the grid, I expect that this will have a negative impact on grid reliability and prices in the northeast. It isn’t like this will happen tomorrow, but if I lived there I would make a long term plan to cope with this.

There may be a few plants in other areas closing, but the Northeast seems to be a focal point.
