Problem With Ducklings

A couple of weeks ago, I made an impulse buy. The kids were begging for ducklings, so I got 3. I don’t even know what kind they are, but I suspect they’re mallards. I have them in the brooder, with the chicks (also an impulse buy. I have my order coming in 2 weeks) and they are growing nicely. They make a huge mess with the water, but we’re dealing with that.

Here’s the problem – I don’t know what to do with them! If I keep them in the henhouse, will they be happy and healthy or do they need a body of water? If I put them in the pond, will the giant catfish or snapping turtles eat them? Of course, I’ll keep them penned up until they’re feathered out, but what then? I didn’t plan this very well, I know, but now what do I do?

Also, if they do turn out to be mallards, do they fly south in the fall? Should I just butcher them? (This is why I usually order my birds, instead of buying them locally. It gives me time to reconsider)
