The red clay underneath isn’t great for gardens, so I’d like to save as much of the topsoil as I can when clearing new spots for the garden. Some weeds come up easily, but grass tends to want to take all the thin layer of the best topsoil with it. Clear off the grass and you’re down to clay. So a good system to separate topsoil from grass and weed roots would be helpful. Composting the whole mess may work but takes too long. I tried rubbing them on a screen with poor results. Need something not too labor/time intensive and not requiring expensive machinery. If nobody has a solution worked out already, I’ll experiment some more.
