Sustainablity in suburbia

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that while it would be ideal to get away to a family cabin we have sitting on many acres of secluded wilderness, it will likely not be feasible with my children who are 2 and 4.

How long can someone realistically survive in a suburban environment with no societal infrastructure. I am not optimistic enough to think that my 7k sq ft of lawn could really grow enough food for the long haul and I can’t imagine getting enough water without making long trips to a water source. I don’t believe it is very likely that there would be any looting or raiding in my neighborhood, I just don’t see it and am hesitant to get a firearm, maybe that is naive.

Does anyone have any ideas for potential suburban home modifications for long term sustainability?
