The 2nd Amendment, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Now, some people like to say that what its saying is that you should have access to weapons only if you’re part of a well regulated militia, another words, only if you’re part of the police or military. So only if you work for the government and if you’ve got a job for the government that involves using weapons should you have access to them. The thing is, that would be absurd. Why would a government have to give itself permission to bear arms? I’ve never known of any government in the world that gives itself to bear arms, and yet all the governments in the world do have weapons. Now, some people like to say that the 2nd amendment doesn’t mean that you can have any weapon for any reason and that would include “military grade weapons.” Citizens should not have access to military grade weapons. Well here’s the problem, when you use terminology such as “military grade,” that can include knives. Infantry soldiers are issued fighting knives and so when you say citizens shouldn’t have access to military grade weapons that could mean such knives. To say citizens shouldn’t be able to get knives just because soldiers use them is absurd. No, if you ask me, and I think this is quite clear, the 2nd Amendment means a citizen should have access to the same weapons an individual soldier would use. Now, some might argue that with that line of reasoning Im saying a citizen should have access to tanks, battleships, nuclear bombs, ect. Well no. Im talking about weapons an individual soldier would use such as a fully automatic or burst fire rifle. An individual soldier does not use a tank, it takes a team to operate a tank. Both battleship and nuclear bombs obviously take lots of people to operate. But any weapon an individual soldier uses and operates by himself a citizen should be able to legally acquire and possess. That is what the 2nd Amendment says.

Yes. But. What the 2A MEANS is something else. In the context of the times people had just won their freedom from a tyrannical government, and the Founding Fathers intended that citizens of this country would always have a final recourse against tyranny.
The 2A was never about hunting, because everyone who wanted to eat at that time hunted. It wasn’t about target shooting on a designated, supervised range because there was no such thing. It was always about being able to do effective combat with an oppressive government, something that was deemed necessary – and is still true today.

    You are both correct.
(BTW: Well regulated means properly functioning. The term is used for a part in wind up clocks the regulate the speed of motion.)

Sorry, the 2nd Amendment grants you NOTHING! ALL it does is say that you are born with inalienable rights, granted to you by your Creator (God), and that the Gov’t CAN NOT TAKE THEM AWAY FROM YOU! Period. You know, that pesky “RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS” bit.

Of course the function of gov’t (or demonrats and RINOs anyway) IS to take away your GOD GIVEN INALIENABLE RIGHTS that they CAN NOT take away from you with out your consent! So trhey can not is why you need to keep and bear arms.
