Well, our power came back on on Sunday morning. Four+ days. We had gotten a “whole house” generator (that is a nice concept) after being out for four days with Hurricane Sandy, and thought we were set. It worked well the first day and a half, and then constantly cut out. (We have a geothermal heat pump with electric backup, so essentially all…[Read more]

The company (Unforgettable Fire) claims it is extremely efficient. can be used in RVs or boats, and can heat up to 1500 sf. There’s a larger version just coming out as well.
There are also upcoming options to heat water, create electricity to charge batteries, as well as a bake oven.

This is the second story I’ve seen about this.
Liberals are catching the prepping bug.
We’re tired of being perceived as wusses who won’t survive when shit hits the fan,” said Stacy, a Texas Democrat who recently caught the prepper bug. She spoke with Vocativ on the condition we not publish her last name. “I, for one, don’t like to be thought o…

I forgot the ghee, powdered butter, and canned butter. I’ve gotten a little of each, as well as some coconut oil.

Low temps and darkness help extend the temps of oils, no matter what it is. I keep most oils in the refrig, except the EV Olive Oil. I keep that in the basement in a dark corner. I would keep the olive oil in the refrig too, if I had the space. I keep a lot of butter frozen. (I use a food saver to try to keep it from absorbing…[Read more]

I got an Excalibur 5 shelf drier (with the timer) last fall and love it! I only wish I had gotten the larger one. I didn’t think I’d use it as much as we do. Even my son will buy apples and dehydrate so he has them to add to cereal.
I bought lots of apples in the fall, and they were eaten practically as fast as I dehydrated them.
I’ve also done…[Read more]

I think I will have the wood heater going pretty good for enough time to dry all the older canned veggies i want to get out of my pantry.
You’re drying veggies that were canned? I’m confused but open to learning something. If they are in one long term storage means, why switch?
I’m drying…

I store canola oil and olive oil. The smaller bottles of olive oil, and the canola, I store in the refrigerator. They have about a year+ pull date.
Cans of olive oil and larger bottles I store in the basement where it stays cooler and is dark.

Has anyone seen or had experience with this free-standing add-on for a wood fireplace?
http://www.plowhearth.com/fireplace-heaters_p10875_s2011_d4000_c1030.html
It is supposed to increase the efficiency of the fireplace by as much as 500%.
The idea seems viable. I suspect the blower needs electricity, but maybe that can come from a battery backup.
