  • Scurvy is prevented by lemons, limes, think limeys, oranges. The british finally figured it out when their sailors were on ships for months at a time without fresh fruits. Limes helped as did the other fruits, they would keep for awhile so started having them.

Yes, supplements would be needed especially with limited diets. It would be rough,…[Read more]

  • We will stay where we live. There are 3 of us but our daughter is mentally challenged would not work well with us and we are now in our early 70’s. We are still in pretty good physical shape but would not work to well for us to leave our home. Luckily we are rural, 15 miles to closest small town with grocery 35 miles to larger city and its not…[Read more]

  • We have been warned a person in a local restaurant has hepatitis. they ware telling us not to worry. They said in Indiana we normally have 12 cases a year and this year 1500 so far! It’s hepatitis A, hubs and I have both had shots because we traveled out of the country and needed them, but DD has not. I’m thinking she is getting it if she can.…[Read more]

  • We also went to am amish area where they have a meat market, the meat is raised on local farms and they process it. It is to absolutely die for and the cost is lower then the store. We stocked up on enough for a couple of months possibly 3 and intend to keep doing so. The quality is outstanding.

This is different but I’m talking to hubs about…[Read more]

  • Been busy, we were going with a smaller garden this year partly due to age. But after hearing about tariffs on Mexico which will affect a lot of our food supply I decided to add more. We were in the process of planting so added more.

Hubs helped this year so we added soaker hoses, then a weedblock and today we added straw over the top. I am…[Read more]

  • I have been sitting here thinking what are absolute essentials, not niceties but absolute, not getting into tools just food wise and keeping us going. There is so much, its almost overwhelming, then I think about when I start running out, that is so scary.

We all know water is the main thing, got to have it no matter what.
But for me matches and…[Read more]

  • See the spam on here, wow. We are getting increased numbers of calls on our home and cells, just constant spam stuff anymore. I’m going to reblock again, I wonder how much good it does anymore.

I am just about finished with my canning, had to buy tomatoes for the second time this summer to can. Never had to do that before. I put up 12 quarts…[Read more]

  • I’m in southern Indiana, make sure I have preps all the time. I guess I grew up prepping, we just took care of ourselves. I am in pretty good shape food wise, add to it as I can. Did a Sam’s run the other day and we drove a couple hours to Odon to stock up on their good meat. It’s in Amish country and the stuff there is wonderful. I should…[Read more]

  • Got most of my canning done, ended up with 45 quarts of stewed tomatoes, lots of spaghetti sauce, tomato juice, and tons of other stuff. I used all my jars I don’t know how many 150 plus or more, bought a case today, had some left for apples but not many. I bought apples today going to can stewed and apples for pies. Also someone on a canning…[Read more]

  • I have ramped up my prepping. If the other tariffs are implemented prices are going to go skyhigh. I wonder too if we will start experiencing shortages. I have friends working that said their companies have stocked up as much as possible on things they use to make items. Also wondering how this will effect farmers, a lot of the Chinese buyers…[Read more]

  • I just spent about $140 on open pollinated seeds, hubs said they likely won’t germinate but I vacuum sealed them. They are not the packaged seeds but bought in bulk, lists the pollinated percentages too, most are very good. I bought a large variety enough for 2 years of planting, as I slow done, maybe 3 years. I made sure none were hybirds, so I…[Read more]

Hi, welcome. I don’t see as much activity either. They had to update the forum awhile ago and after that I think they lost people, can’t say for sure. But to me its now difficult to navigate. I think they also lost topics, there used to be some lively discussion here and a lot of information. You might want to monitor it for awhile and see if…[Read more]

I don’t like the flat caps I’m getting for my canning jars, the adhesive is skimpy on them as compared to old ones. I finally gave up and ordered a sleeve of wide ones from Lehman’s, for 288 was $89, ouch, but hope they are better, you can also get just rims. A lot of mine are rusting, I think there were 60 in a lot for $19.95, so not to bad for…[Read more]

We would only bury if it became imminent danger and had to leave the house for awhile. That would be very very bad as there is to much here to move. We are so close to having everything we need. Hubs moved a wood stove from his dads garage to here. Our house is well insulated enough it would heat most of it and he has tools, “junk”, and…[Read more]

In talking to a friend and neighbor, he and I have found we have common ground on being very worried with all that is going on politically. He admitted he is scared to death, never seen anything like what is happening now, he is near our age. He is like hubs can make anything from anything and is hubs friend for many a year, so good to find a…[Read more]

    • I enjoyed reading your post it made me start thinking outside the box once again. I have considered stashing food our water table is pretty high where we live so burying it might not be a good idea hmmm maybe if I buried a freezer and stored things inside.

We have a well but I don’t have any way to draw water from it if the power goes off.. I can…[Read more]

My tomatoes are finally starting to get ripe, just a few. I have to weed out there, I mowed half the garden down after pulling my onions, may have 5 pounds, didn’t plant many and we were eating off them. I picked about 1/4 of my green beans and pulled the plants, I still have a ton. I would let people know to come and pick but they are to lazy…[Read more]

  • Wow, never heard of those before. Quite interesting. But I’m thinking they lived in those as protection from raiders, but quite the places, that’s for sure.

Health issues are starting to interfere with my life. I am having problems getting into my heart doctor and I think I need it. Osteoarthritus and degenerative disk disease in my back isn’t helping. And my doc did a catscan to see if my pancreas is inflamed from meds I’m taking. This stuff is just from aging but its impacting my life and I hate…[Read more]

We need to be vigilant and prep more. I’m reading that Russia and China are working on accumulating tons and tons of gold. We are taking on debt like crazy and the Russians over the last few months have sold 84% of the US bonds they own and converting to gold. Other countries are doing the same, they can then undermine us and go on the gold…[Read more]
