  • I’m in southern Indiana, make sure I have preps all the time. I guess I grew up prepping, we just took care of ourselves. I am in pretty good shape food wise, add to it as I can. Did a Sam’s run the other day and we drove a couple hours to Odon to stock up on their good meat. It’s in Amish country and the stuff there is wonderful. I should…[Read more]

  • Got most of my canning done, ended up with 45 quarts of stewed tomatoes, lots of spaghetti sauce, tomato juice, and tons of other stuff. I used all my jars I don’t know how many 150 plus or more, bought a case today, had some left for apples but not many. I bought apples today going to can stewed and apples for pies. Also someone on a canning…[Read more]

  • I have ramped up my prepping. If the other tariffs are implemented prices are going to go skyhigh. I wonder too if we will start experiencing shortages. I have friends working that said their companies have stocked up as much as possible on things they use to make items. Also wondering how this will effect farmers, a lot of the Chinese buyers…[Read more]

  • I just spent about $140 on open pollinated seeds, hubs said they likely won’t germinate but I vacuum sealed them. They are not the packaged seeds but bought in bulk, lists the pollinated percentages too, most are very good. I bought a large variety enough for 2 years of planting, as I slow done, maybe 3 years. I made sure none were hybirds, so I…[Read more]

Hi, welcome. I don’t see as much activity either. They had to update the forum awhile ago and after that I think they lost people, can’t say for sure. But to me its now difficult to navigate. I think they also lost topics, there used to be some lively discussion here and a lot of information. You might want to monitor it for awhile and see if…[Read more]

I don’t like the flat caps I’m getting for my canning jars, the adhesive is skimpy on them as compared to old ones. I finally gave up and ordered a sleeve of wide ones from Lehman’s, for 288 was $89, ouch, but hope they are better, you can also get just rims. A lot of mine are rusting, I think there were 60 in a lot for $19.95, so not to bad for…[Read more]

I just cooked some of that sausage for breakfast and just like the hamburger it was to die for.

We would only bury if it became imminent danger and had to leave the house for awhile. That would be very very bad as there is to much here to move. We are so close to having everything we need. Hubs moved a wood stove from his dads garage to here. Our house is well insulated enough it would heat most of it and he has tools, “junk”, and…[Read more]

In talking to a friend and neighbor, he and I have found we have common ground on being very worried with all that is going on politically. He admitted he is scared to death, never seen anything like what is happening now, he is near our age. He is like hubs can make anything from anything and is hubs friend for many a year, so good to find a…[Read more]

    • I enjoyed reading your post it made me start thinking outside the box once again. I have considered stashing food our water table is pretty high where we live so burying it might not be a good idea hmmm maybe if I buried a freezer and stored things inside.

We have a well but I don’t have any way to draw water from it if the power goes off.. I can…[Read more]

  • My tomatoes are finally starting to get ripe, just a few. I have to weed out there, I mowed half the garden down after pulling my onions, may have 5 pounds, didn’t plant many and we were eating off them. I picked about 1/4 of my green beans and pulled the plants, I still have a ton. I would let people know to come and pick but they are to lazy…[Read more]

  • Wow, never heard of those before. Quite interesting. But I’m thinking they lived in those as protection from raiders, but quite the places, that’s for sure.

  • Health issues are starting to interfere with my life. I am having problems getting into my heart doctor and I think I need it. Osteoarthritus and degenerative disk disease in my back isn’t helping. And my doc did a catscan to see if my pancreas is inflamed from meds I’m taking. This stuff is just from aging but its impacting my life and I hate…[Read more]

  • We need to be vigilant and prep more. I’m reading that Russia and China are working on accumulating tons and tons of gold. We are taking on debt like crazy and the Russians over the last few months have sold 84% of the US bonds they own and converting to gold. Other countries are doing the same, they can then undermine us and go on the gold…[Read more]

  • We have a Davis Vantage Vue, we are happy with it but it was about $260. It is tied into wifi though so it or electric goes down it does. It has a battery backup that will run for awhile but still needs wifi.

I bought one for our son for Christmas and it has most of the features and was a little over a $100, he is quite happy with it.

    We like…[Read more]

I am making progress with food storage. I now have 71 containers of corn in the freezer. Yesterday I put up 18 pint and a half containers of peaches, 6 quart freezer containers, then canned 7 quarts. My small freezer is full of strawberries, peaches, and corn. I added 3 quarts of blackberries today, I want more but not at $4.50 a quart and…[Read more]

I canned 2 bushels of peaches one year – pie filling, plain peaches, and peach jam. We just didn’t eat it as fast as I thought we would. 6-8 years later, still had a lot of that stuff left. We cleaned it out of the LTS and just got rid of it. It wasn’t bad, just lost a lot of nutritional value and had turned a dark, unappetizing color. So off it…[Read more]

I’m excited got my relish, carrots, and B & B pickles canned. 18 pints of pickles 23 pints of relish, not sure how many of carrots.

Hubs cracked the radius in his arm so not going to be able to help much for awhile, back to doc in 2 weeks. I painted 12 shutters today he had taken down. Going to see if I can put them back up, they were very sun…[Read more]

  • I got the sewing machine for $225. Hubs approved, I found you can get parts and supplies for it even though its old. 1963 industrial Singer 188k1. I ordered needles, special thread in white, black, tan, and navy, bobbins, 1 new bobbin case for it. These old ones have all steel parts and will likely be good when I’m gone. Hubs is going to put on…[Read more]

  • I just finished preparing corn for the freezer. Today was my last batch, I have 71 containers of corn and I’m done for this year. Hubs helped shuck and I prepped, took a couple of hitches to get it done. Have up 23 pints of relish, a lot of work but we use a lot of it. I’m thinking of putting up at least 7 more. I put it in potato and…[Read more]

  • It’s ok right now. However the tax cuts only spurred stockholder buy backs for big business an some 1 time bonuses. I don’t know of anyone that got more money. Interest rates are now rising, gas is rising, the cost of everything is going to go up if these tariffs stay in place. The trillion dollar tax cut is going to hurt in many ways as…[Read more]

Linda, I am the only other one here that is considered a liberal, however, I consider myself a moderate. It’s been rough here but I hung in for the information. There are some good ideas here, so good luck. I’m not fond of the new format, but hope it will improve, guess time will tell.
