What is the difference? Homesteader, Prepper, Survivalist?

Postby jayt » Mon Dec 17, 2012 5:44 pm

I was invited to start a thread on this so here it is.

What is the difference? Homesteader, Prepper, Survivalist?

I tend to think of myself as a homesteader. And I will be honest that I have had some bad experiences with prepper/suvivalist. My goal is to have a better frame of mind. Not pick fights or bash anyone.. so help me get over my negitive images.

The difference is in semantics...Everyone is a prepper. For anyone who denies this, ask if they buy toilet paper daily in 7 square increments or eggs two at a time.

The difference is in magnitude...wipes and waste...
The survivalist gets toilet paper in MREs and dumps it on man traps  ,
the prepper has it in 500 roll cases and launches it at marauders  ,
and the homesteader uses newspaper and fertilises corn and beans with it :D .

I think it's a difference in goals and attitude. I am a self reliance farmer so i guess I fall into the homesteader thing. I can and will survive, all on my own. I hunt/butcher for myself so that crosses over into other designations.

I like the 'goals and attitude" point being made. So how much of the differnce is based on land ownership?

I have met some prep'surv in central OK, was not well inpressed... these FEW... acted like they where playing games.

a couple we rented an acre of land to use couldn't keep their mouths shut to save a life...and they trashed our land.

effn a... they dumped out bathtubs full of water because the goat dropped a few turds into it.... used plastic like it was paper... and hid their trash for years
(which I found out later after i had to clean it up)

One reason i am posting this stuff is to help everyone understand how much the actions of a FEW hurt everyones image.
and to help others spot the signs of a "user" in a prepper's fleece...

or... I can just drop it.. and go for a walk through my trees

actually jayt, I had an experience similar to yours with a "prepper" I allowed to come to my farm under the guise of learning more about self reliance. He was a big time user, liar, etc. So, I can relate.

For our purposes "Homesteader" refers to those who choose to live a self reliant life on a small acerage. They are if you will "Freeholders". The Old Saxon term is "Socman" as opposed to a serf bonded to the land and virtually owned by the Land Holder. "Homesteaders" can also be "Preppers" or "Survivalists" and often are.

The term "Prepper" was invented by folks who did not want to be associated with "Survivalists" in the Public mind. These are folks who see a lot of problems coming down the road and prepare for those catastrophes by stockpiling goods and developing skills to prosper when everything breaks down. There is virtually no difference other than the name between "Survivalists" and "Preppers". The term "Survivalist" was so trashed by the popular media that I can't say as I blame folks for wanting to dissassociate.

The IRONY of the situation is that the hatchet job that was done to "Survivalists" is now being done to "Preppers". In fact it is even worse than the job done on "Survivalists" So all those nice folks who wanted to be accepted by the mass of Sheep and the Popular Media are now considered paranoid, gap toothed, inbred morons who kill school kids at the drop of a hat. Ya just can't win guys. Might as well stay "Survivalists" and live with it.

It's kinda like a bucket of crabs. One crab tries to get out of the bucket and avoid the cook pot and the other crabs grab em and haul them back down into the death bucket so they can eventually become crab cakes too.

It's actually kind of funny in a Black Humour sort of way.

I don't think that having a first aid kit and some stored canned foods qualifies you to be a survivalist. But anyone who prepares on any level is a prepper. preparer = prepper. That is the main reason why people identify with the term prepper because not all preppers are survivalists.

Thanks NIP your point is valid. The difference between Preppers & Survivalists can indeed be seen as a matter of degree.
My point (inarticulate as it may have been made) is that we are all going to continue to be painted with the same Tar Brush.
Notice how the media (Doomsday Preppers as a case in point) has a majority of folks with Rural Southern Accents & Speech Patterns? This has become a marker in a myth created that has the rural southern racist hick as the bad guy in lots of the mythological stories they create. (Ya I know lots of extremely intelligent folks who sa "ya'll" too). It's the myth created that is to blame. I'm just pointing it out so hold yer fire pardners.
So we can talk among ourselves all we want. We're all being cast as the bad guys.

It's kind of like the Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical ect divide. Those denominations can demonize each other all they want but in the end our common enemy sees us as all the same scum and will have our priests & preachers hanging from the same gallows & us in the same re-education camps. All of our fine theological differences will mean very little at that point eh :). So Prepper or Survivalist ...hang together or hang seperate...Interesting choice eh.

I think there is a matter of intent as well... I have seen an attitude of bravado with survialist... that smacks of "I have the weapons to take what I want." I can respect the 'keep what I have" way of thinking... I think I have more respect for someone who owns land, than those who don't... I have more respect for someone who keeps their weapons 'low key' ...instead of ,... well,.....talking/bragging about, "I have BIG guns"... and wearing them like a an actor in a B movie... I have become wary of the 'preppers' who talk too much... show off (brag about) their radio's and tell everyone where they live...or their detailed plans for bugging out. I distrust anyone who talks about shooting intruders as a normal part of their conversation...(if you do this PLEASE SHUT UP) I am female and have lived out here 10 plus years... all I say is, "I have guns and dogs..." I distrust anyone who over reacts to gun fire, as if, it is a cue to load up and run someone down. (esp not on their own land) I have become weary of those who read a book and become an expert... or act like they are 'the one' who can tell you all you need to know...

I watch for signs of immature reactions. such as over reaction to preditors... and keeping too many cats.... trespassing burns me up-- allowing/saying its ok to do so enrages me (with a slow cold burn) ... I'll go and calm down now.

"Divide and conquer" This is what Hitler used against the Jews in Germany, what this government uses against it's own people. What Obama is using against the GOP on things like the "fiscal cliff," "gun control," the so called rich against the so called poor. We as a people are being divided in many different ways every day. How long do you think we will prosper as a country with all these fractions at work against us?

The worst part is that it is working and we as a people/country are letting it work!
