Can anyone tell me what this is

Postby mercmouth » Thu Sep 27, 2012 9:26 am

Found a ton of these growing out of the ground while me and a friend were out looking for a good place to build a camp and practice bushcraft. Neither of us know what it is and im having trouble finding and info on it.

I'm sure it is a mushroom of some type... you didnt say what area you were in.. this would help in ident. of the shroom/fungus.

Fungus.

Don't eat it.

Edit: I am not sure which kind. The stem gives it away, but I have never seen that sort before myself.

Hard to say by the picture, but look like a false morel. If the cap is separated from the stem, its not the real thing.

I thought it looked like a false morel too at first, but it does not have the spongy body of most false morels (or Morels), even if the shape is right. It looks almost scaley. I could be wrong of course, but I do not think it is a Morel or False Morel.

Its a mushroom but all the black ones have light colored stems. Tried a few ID websites and nothing like it.

Most States have a Mycological Society
We have one here in Minnesota
I suspect that with your unusual find they would be very interested & could help you identify the spiecies.
Maybe a little reasearch is in order so you can send the photos to them eh

Definitely a mushroom but being a hunter of wild mushrooms I have to say I've never seen one of these in books or online.

My curiosity also led me to look for this online, and I cant find anything that looks like it at all.
