Real Preppers... What weed did you eat in July

Postby sageprice » Tue Jul 14, 2015 7:19 pm

I realize you have a lot of gadgets and food stored up but what have you done to practice foraging when that all runs out. Last month I plucked poke and Lambs Quarters for greens and this month I have harvested clover for pot greens and also vegetable flour. I let you know how the clover works out in another month :D :D

Clover blossom for flour
Dock seed for flour
Dock leave as a green
Black berries
Lambs quarters
Knot weed tips
Water cress
Wild bee balm dried for tea mixes
Wild self heal dried
Last of the huckleberry
I think that's all but might of missed something

Ground cherries are in abundance this year.
Elderberries are just starting and picked a bucket this morning.
Blackberries have been study all spring, but are now slowing down.
I love the new shoots of cat brier!
Wild onions are in abundance. Tiny but good.
Wild plums are tart, but a nice change.
Love plantain when it is tender and it is everywhere around the yard.
Same thing for Lamb's-quarters.

Great subject and thank you for posting! Swamp

Well,I didn't eat it, but my Dad showed me what purslane is - the stuff is growing all over our yards! I plan to put it in the salads.

I asked Dad and Husband to keep an eye out for a downed hickory tree - I need to make some more hickory syrup, which is mighty tasty. Both are cutting wood for winter.

seriously, unless I'm sick and need some plaintain or mares tail, I dont eat weeds. I am a successful gardener and really, don't need to eat weeds.

Purslane by the handful. Love it. Also took some wild radish out of the freezer (i used a food saver for the first time,in the spring) and,if held up really well.

Thistles are still common but starting to cure some so not as nice as earlier.

I know the ground cherries are about, but none nearby.

I DO have a ton of wild grapes just maturing....

All the more for me, LOL. I don't eat weeds out of need, but because they taste good. Kinda like nibbling the raw string beans while I work in the garden...purslane makes a lovely raw nibble - thirst quenching and lemony all at once. Some of my edibles are also considered invasive, so it is a civic duty to eat them (garlic mustard, for example). Best of all I like the thrift factor - no plant killed goes to waste around here. If they are not of culinary, veterinary, or herbal use, they enrich my compost heap. But to be honest, I find few plants/weeds that are not good for some use.

My GO TO drink while camping down river is tea made from Wood Sorrel. It is a light green tea, with just a little tartness from the oxalic acid. I love it.
How awesome is it to have this resource and not need to carry any drink mixes or drinks?

Many weeds that were imports from Europe and were actually grown in gardens. :)

Some weeds are as good as anything you can grow. What I like best is the variety they offer. We have wild onions that are small, but have a better flavor than anything I have ever grown or bought. Same thing for local wild plumbs, green, and May-haws.

Perhaps I can always depend on my garden and stores, but then perhaps not. What you cannot imagine can kill you. Swamp

I wouldn't know what to eat that is wild. Not on my list. And you never know if a bear or bore peed on them.
