Welcome axeslinger. It's good to have another NC person on the site. I think MtM covered everything about the camp site.

So is this even possible??? I started thinking about this. We want a spot we can drive to and pitch a tent with views and no other campers. To me this sounds like private property or a space we need to pay for. Just worried about this because so many others will want it even without all the 'extras'.

Would Craigslist help us maybe find someone willing to let us 'rent a spot'? Does anyone know a farmer out near the mountains who would be willing let us use their land? I'd be willing to put in a few hours work to 'pay' for the stay. Can't wait to hear from Axeslinger, hopefully I'm very wrong.

I know, too much to expect. We were spoiled by Arizona where we knew several great camping spots that fit the bill, most only 1 to 2 hours away. And were totally free. I was hoping that someone who knows NC well would know about such spots here. If this doesn't work out, we will figure something. Maybe a picnic or cookout.

Just head west and north for 3 or 4 thousand miles, and you will find a really good spot here.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be negative. Just wondering if we might have to be more creative about our search since this seems to be a pretty tough find.

I'm in for that weekend, whatever we decide. Wish I knew more about the state to help.

I didn't take it as negative--just truthful. :) I am just frustrated that I know so little about NC right now. I lived in AZ for 30 years so had a lot of time to explore and get to know it. I am not giving up and will continue to research our options. Thanks for hanging in there with us!

Sorry it's taken so long to get back!

Depending on how far you want to travel...
If not far, I would suggest googling camping in the Uwarrhie Nat'l Forsest. That would probably get you someplace w/in about 1.5 hours of Raleigh. However, I've done NO camping in this area...I like the mountains too much.

But, here's a suggestion that I think would satisfy you: "Doughton Park". It's a state run campground right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is little known and almost always fairly empty. I could direct you to some other spots in the Pisgah Nat'l Forest that are waaaay off the beaten path, but I suspect that will be too far to travel for you, as from Raleigh, it would be 4+hours.

Here's some info on Doughton Park:

Should be about 2.5 hours from Raleigh. Privacy between sites is decent...though some are pretty good. Because it's state run, they run a pretty tight ship there and don't allow any shenanigans.

Hey, Axeslinger! Thanks for the information. We made a reservation at a campground that sounds like it will meet our needs--not exactly what we were looking for, but convenient. So far we have 4 or maybe 5 forum members, some of us with family members, who will be attending. Let me know if you can join us and I will PM you the details.

Thanks for the "official" invite. But, I've got a son graduating H.S. on the 12th who then leaves for Army basic training at Ft Benning, Ga a mere two weeks later. We'll be spending lots of time with him over those last days before he leaves.

That is about the best excuse I have ever heard! Congratulations to your son, and I hope you have a wonderful time with him and wish him luck. God bless him and your family.
