I will have the farraday cage protected ham gear up and running ASAP after "the event", and I will also have CB rigs running to communicate with local folks that have those. So having multiple capabilities is my comms plan in a nutshell. MURS is one area I don't have included, but those 5 channels, and low power would be useful.
Jerry, after all the wrangling about FCC and watts, then finding an article about counterfit Kenwoods being sold that were very poor quality, I picked up these Motorola-T7400s all 5 for 120 bucks. they are .5 watts on the open channels, and 2 watts on the on ones you need a license for. I figure if it ever gets so bad i flip to the high power then i'll welcome the FCC coming to get me.

Good choice for inexpensive LOCAL comms... easy to operate and definitely useable for you and yours within a neighborhood sized area up to a couple miles for sure. Most can operate on their included rechargeable batteries, OR on AA batteries if there is no power for recharging. That's how I set mine up.... the rechargeable bateries are set aside for "normal" use, but the AAs are packed with the radios for the SHTF packs. CHEERS!

I got a bunch of rechargeable AAs in my preps along with a Goal Zero guide 10 to charge off my extreme 350 to keep them juiced.
