Too bad I did not join this site a decade ago, then I could have added my name to this list. But, living in the lower 48 right now...
I lived in Homer for a few years shortly after I got out of the USN, hoping by the grace of God that I get to return someday.

Hi and welcome to all I may have missed. Have been having internet problems and since I am out in the middle of nowhere, not a lot of options on fixing it.
TomCatPC, you can be an homorary Alaskan anyway, can't you? You have lived here and know a bit about the conditiions here, pros and cons.

Government have dug their claws into it pretty deep, not all that much in the highest priced oil years ever seen.

Can I join this group even though I'm not back in AK yet? I soooo miss it. Within less than a year from now I should be a Fairbanksan again.
Hey anyone ever try raising chickens up there? How about rabbits?

Hi Tamtbell, sure, you can join us. The more the merrier. I managed to have a pair of rabbits over the winter that I would love to find homes for. The guy that had them turned them all loose when he didn't want to be bothered any more so I ran a couple down and caught them with a dipnet. Now that would have made funniest video and I am so glad no one was around with a camera. It was already late Fall and I didn't know what to do with them and the rest were getting hit on the road and I'm a sucker at heart. Anyway, I would rather keep a couple of chickens inside all winter than a couple of rabbits. One is all silver grey, the other is a light colored calico if it were a cat. White, light orange and grey.

I cannot wait to move back! It all just depends on JOBS. Hubby is retiring from the Army, I might get my old job back up at Ft Wainwright. If that all happens then the rest will go smoothly!

I used to live around North Pole and in it for a very short period of time while still married to the Toad. I liked North Pole. When I make it to town for Church, I go to North Pole. So far, 3 times this year, lol. $50 a round trip, so usually don't go anywhere very often.

Hello fellow Alaskans! I am aaaaaalllll the way down in our Southern most city of Ketchikan. Which means that the climate is completely different than just about everyone's posts I have seen. I admit I did not read all 7 pages but I did not see anyone from Southeast. It is a little discouraging as I would love love LOVE to have other like minded people to bounce ideas off of and perhaps band together should the scoobies hit the fan. My fiance and I have not only been prepping a couple years now (slowly adding to the stockpile) but more importantly, gained many new skills. This year I put in my very first garden and I must say I am rather impressed with my little self-perhaps some of what my Grandma did when I was a kid soaked in haha! I have learned to jar meats, stock, and veggies. I have learned to make jerky and dry herbs in our dehydrator. We know how to smoke fish ~without~ using an electric smoker (thanks Grandpa!). Growing up in Southeast and being outdoorsy types, we have taken to learning and memorizing different plants and their uses, you get the idea. There is so much more to learn though!

I look forward to reading up on the posts for/from Alaskans and perhaps getting to know some of you better as well.
