Seed exchange - And a talk on Bulk Dry Food Storage

Postby Sasquatch » Sun Jan 09, 2011 12:22 am

Hello Everybody,
I have just found the forum and am very excited. I really want to do an in person meeting and get to meet some fellow preppers.
So I thought a good activity would be a Seed Exchange and a talk on Bulk Dry Food Storage. I will give the talk if you show up.

I do not have a venue yet but I do have a date: Thursday evening February 3rd or 10th at 7:00 pm. Odd it seems, I know but ... its not friday saturday or sunday and its not during daytime hours. So it shouldn't interfere with work or family time, and it is just before the first moon favorable dates for starting garden seeds indoors. Feb 13 - 18 for some plants. then March 14- 19 for the next batch - I will also bring the moon favorable dates chart for starting plans indoors and outdoors for many different types of plants for our area.

spreading successful seed around gives a group like ours the ability to test different varieties and test germination rates and varrying methods. So lets get together have an appetizer and a drink spread some seed and I'll do my best to make plastic buckets interesting. - So please record your methods and results - I will also be posting seed saving techniques throughout the year.
Please make sure any seeds you save are heirloom seeds. - hybrids and GMO's cannot be trusted to continue to propagate.

Venue suggestions would be great.
Talk to you tomorrow
Sasquatch.

Oh by the way if you don't have any seeds to share you can get some at Comstock Ferre or just come as you are and get a few samples.

If we spread out our seeds across a larger geographic region and lots of people plant the same stock, there are several advantages, especially if everybody saves seeds as well:

-we can get more accurate information on germination rates.
-We can get better information on successful techniques and conditions for certain types of vegetables by recording a weekly journal recording methods conditions dates of planting water cycles etc.
-also in future exchanges when some one of us has a very good result we can share that seed so we cann all
-and last but not least - if we all save seeds, then if anybody in the group has a failure or a loss, we can fall back each other to rebuild our seed stock.

I will be bringing Acorn Squash, and Butternut Squash.

please email me your date preferences. oh and your general location.

Welcom to Connecticut Preppers Sasquatch!! I love the idea of the seed exchange.

What part of the state are we looking at for the meetup? That will determine whether or not I can make it on a work night.
I'm an early to bed, early to rise, kind of girl :)

Bruce if its going to be at your place, I probably won't be able to make it. Its a min 45 min ride for me and a 7 p.m. start time would make it pretty late for me getting home. 5 a.m. comes way too early to be up much past 9 on a school night. Sleep is one of the MAIN criteria for keeping my fibromyalgia in check.

City, IRo, Rod,
This concept is pretty fluid if 7 pm is too late we could move it to 6 or 6:30, would that work? - I imagine our first meeting will be pretty small - I will likely bring 1 maybe 2 people with me and we can all bring a snack or beverage. The talk I have prepared on Long Term Bulk Dry Food Storage shouldn't be too long - I try to make them about the length that it would take to read an in depth magazine article 25-35 min at the most, the rest will be mostly exchanging seeds and meeting fellow preppers. (So at the moment our attendance count is a likely 6)

City any progress with the wife? no pressure - I think this first meeting will be small enough that we could probably do it at a coffee shop if needs be.

For those not interested in this subject or seeds please watch for future postings I will be offering other subjects. Some subjects do run longer than the 25- 35 minute time frame. But for the most part I do keep them to that length.

March's proposed subject - Soil Preparation / Starting Raised Beds from Zero. Followed with an open discussion of garden layouts (please bring copies of your layout and any succession planting you plan to do) March Proposed Date 3/10/11

April I will move off of gardening in preparation for fishing season ... Proposed Subject - What you should have in your Survival Kit for Fishing ... or the Minimalists Fishing Kit. (pick your title the info is pretty much the same. :))

Lets all make this work. Community is just as important to survival and preparation as getting your preps done.

Ok. Drilling this one down let me know how many people will be coming so I know how many sets of notes to print up and how many seed packets to prepare.

Starbucks

February 3rd 6:30 PM

As long as most of us get a coffee they won't give us a hard time for having a meeting there :)

City I know you are in. Three others will also be there. Rod? IRo? any one else?
Keep me posted.
Thank you all for making me feel so welcome :) I am really glad to have found this forum.

You will have a great time and so glad all of you are getting together. This is just exactly what is needed, more Preppers getting together in mutual support.
