Bug out plans living in the Panhandle area

Postby tjtaz » Sat Dec 15, 2012 12:57 pm

We live in Pensacola, and are debating on what to do should we have to leave the area, where would we go, I was thinking of heading north but now I am not so certain that staying put may be a better option. We are prepping for the total failure of our socioeconomic system where food is scarce and Florida’s southernmost population will move in the only direction it can, north. Living in the Panhandle this will, I think, not be too much of an issue, interstate 10 however, is something to keep in mind. We live in Cantonment a northern community of Pensacola and the closest big city is Mobile, 50 miles to the west of us. We are planning to stay but are looking for a “plan B” should we have to go; we have a RV and a Jeep with trailer. Looking for input from any panhandle preppers who may be debating whether to stay or go; what are your thoughts, where would you go.

There is a lot of very affordable land in south GA / South Alabama. I am in the NE of Flordia, but I have given south GA some thought. A piece of land at least 20-30 miles away from the major highways would not be bad for a short term bug out in your RV. You could take most of your supplies as well as extra fuel, and wait out anything bad there while living in the RV. If you got 10-15 acres you could add a well and maybe a small shed for storage and be pretty much good to go. With the Jeep you would be able to travel around the area.

Just an idea.

The panhandle has some nice small rural communities with LOTS of nothing in-between, and real estate is pretty reasonable!!
I was just in Pensacola a couple weeks ago.
A website I have frequently used over the years to gain insight to various locations is city-data. If you have a town in mind, just type it in and see all sorts of data from population, elevation, crime rate, and much more.
http://www.city-data.com/city/Florida.html
check it with the setting for Florida Very Small Towns and Villages (< 1000 residents)

Some years ago DH and I weren't willing to 'find out' if we would be ok in a similarly large city if shtf and moved to the country.

if your rooted in cantonment then I would look to the wooded north for a bugout. but only go as far as you have to.
I am south of bagdad, right on the water and plan to stay put for the reason you mentioned....I think most people will move north from the gulf.

I think it is more dependant on what or how it happens. Pcola has enough bad areas that I do think it would be good to get at least 50-100 miles away. At least Santa Rosa or Okaloosa county or into remote areas of AL or MS, and away from interstate and major highways. We have family at the north end of Okaloosa county we're planning to disappear to.

I would look for a place where you could sustain life.
North, south, or west...
If I were you - I would want to be 100 miles away from the nearest city slicker.

I'm wondering how you all faired due to hurricane Irma. Did you get a lot of people from other areas trying to escape the path? How were the supplies in the area?
