A police officer fatally shot a man while responding to an emergency call now called a 'swatting' prank

[snip]

A police officer in Wichita fatally shot a man while responding to an emergency call that authorities now say was a tragic and senseless prank.

The 28-year-old man, whom officials did not immediately identify, was killed around 6:20 p.m. Thursday after police responded to a report that there had been a shooting and hostages taken at the house, Deputy Wichita Police Chief Troy Livingston said at a Friday news conference.

“Due to the actions of a prankster, we have an innocent victim,” Livingston said, calling it a case of “swatting.”

Swatting, which has a long history in the online gaming world, refers to the practice of making an emergency call about a fake situation often involving a killing or hostages, in the hopes of sending police to the address of an adversary or random person.

not swatting - just the most stupid swat officer on the planet .... guy opens the front door to see what the commotion is all about and a single cop blew him away ...

as I posted elsewhere - it has to be at least a 90%+ chance that a person that opens the front door all innocent - ISN'T THE BAD GUY

On this we completely agree - but it is always in my best interest to be ready for anything and that includes untrained cops on a hormone rush. Some of the best people I know are in law enforcement, but that is not true for many of them. Swamp

Hubs and I have talked about this....as the parent of a LEO, I often side with law enforcement BUT there is blame on BOTH sides of this equation. Numb Nuts over in Cali thinking it's some how funny to Swat or Prank someone is one sick A-Hole - knowing it could result in death.

This will be a training opportunity for many Law Enforcement departments and teams. Learn from your mistakes.

In the meantime, several lives are ruined and that's just sad when it didn't have to happen.

Just think if it was not a prank call by some dip and in fact it was a hostage involved call were the hostage taker said he was thinking on setting the house on fire and as he exited the house the house burst out in flames killing all inside . Now the facts are the officer did not know it was a hoax , with the info from 911 call being reported to LEO it was a hostage / nut job saying he was going to burn down the house also . Above are facts not hearsay .
So the blame sits with the prank call that started the ball rolling and ended with a life being taken . The officer might have acted too quickly but it was a judgement call and one he will have to live with the rest of his life . There are a lot of if's here , the prank call , the fellow not following Leo instructions , his actions , the officer reaction , the 911 call and information given to the officers .

The facts are, an officer has the rest of his life to try to justify his actions and an innocent man does not. Swamp

doesn't matter how the call got started - you think bogus calls and mistake 911s are rare - the coppers knew they were responding to a private home with some kind of violence and that hostages were involved ... period

how the hell would this shooter cop respond to a school - a mall - a stadium - a chuch ???? - empty all his magazines taking down people coming out the door? ...

this was a SWAT member - veteran officer - specially trained - and not some ethnic %%%% hired Somali idiot ....

Facts are facts but you can spin it however you want . So yep the cop just wanted to kill somebody that is what they all live for . A good head shot and watch the brain matter splatter out the other side . If you have never seen it it all happen in slow motion that gray cloud as it spreads out into thin air .

The prankster should be charged with 1st degree murder and the cop negligent homicide. Not sure when the shoot first syndrome took over, but it sure wasn't the case when I was working.

"snip"

Overall, 25% of Americans say they have a great deal of confidence in the police, 27% quite a lot, 30% "some," 16% "very little" and 2% "none." The combined 18% who have very little or no confidence in police is the highest Gallup has measured to date.
