Relocating

Postby Wyreteck » Tue Sep 25, 2012 1:16 pm

My fiance and I are planning to move to northern Maine within the year. We've both done a lot of research on ME's superfund sites, pollution, wind currents if nuc-plants go done, etc. For us northern area of ME looks like best bet.

We'd like any information on resources in Aroostook area. Specifically best farms to buy livestock and starter plants. We've both previously lived in ME so know full well weather concerns. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I see no one has responded to this. I am brand new to the site but I am originally from Aroostook County. The southern part of the County (Houlton / Island Falls area)has more small farms that will sell livestock and produce. I am sorry but don't have specific info on the names of farms right at hand.
The northern part of the County (where I am from) has more farmland but it is mainly industrial potato and broccoli farms. There are still many farmers up there that sell produce and livestock directly to consumers but they are fewer in that location.
Personally, I prefer the northern part of the County. But I admit I am biased.
The real problem you'll find up there (and the reason I left) is the complete lack of employment. There is not industry to speak of and the main employer is either the state or social service agencies. But, if you have skills you can have a great life up there.
I will say that the FIRST chance I get to move back I will be packing up and heading back home. The area is wonderful for hunting and fishing and is the best place I have seen to raise children.

Hey thanks for the reply - we haven't made the move yet; your area is where we've been looking...mostly because of the lack of dense population. We're both retired so the employment issues aren't something that's going to be an issue (hopefully - as I see your fuel costs are higher.) We've both lived in Maine in the past and it's one of the things that brought us together...wanting to live there. Again, thank you so much for the post.
