Wheat and Grains

Postby Stinkeye » Thu Apr 10, 2014 7:53 am

Hi Neighbors,

We grind our own wheat and sometimes corn, I usuallly order it off of Amazon but shipping is really expensive. Does anyone know if there are any local merchants that sell bags of wheat, corn, oats, etc... I would much rather support some local businesses and save the shipping costs.

Thanks,
Stinkeye

P.S. I live in the Manch/Nahua area so I would be willing to drive to Mass., Maine, and even Vermont.

Learn to buy it by the truckload to feed your livestock and you. Its cheaper and then you are prepped for the long haul.

Look in the flour section of WalMart (of all places!) mine sells 25 lb sacks of white whole wheat which is very handy. For corn and red whole wheat I've had the best luck at feed mills. Purchase PLAIN, untreated whole grains. The folks that work there (and feed their own families grains from there) tell me the only real difference between the 'animal' grains and the 'people' grains is the size of the kernels. The 'animal' grains are smaller, so you will have a little more roughage when you grind it. They were wrong though...there is another difference....the PRICE!
I got 50 lb sacks of red whole wheat kernels for $12; 50 lb sacks of whole kernel dent corn were $6.
Some lots are cleaner than others, so I just wash the grains well before use.
New laws are like new taxes....both evolve, but they never go away.

I found this list of wheat producers online, along with the fact that Vermont was once known as "America's Breadbasket" for its wheat production. Cheap shipping caused New England's wheat acreage to fall, but now I understand it's undergoing a comeback. Here's a suggestion from a resident of north-central Kansas: Find a farmer who is growing wheat and offer to buy the grain direct. Wheat grows across the road from my place, and every harvest I relieve the farmer of a bushel for $20, right out of the combine. You can't get it any fresher.

New England Wheat Producers

Here’s a sampling of producers around the region that are growing, distributing, or baking with New England wheat.

My co-op gets their non-GMO grain from Wheat Montana (http://www.wheatmontana.com/). Just picked up my fall order.

Another option is the LDS cannery? store in Worcester. I have not made it over there yet but plan to at some point.

I recently purchased a 50 lb. bag of pop corn from Walmart on line with free delivery. Amazon also sells it too.

I need to careful with my prep supplies since my grandson is extremely allergic to gluten. This pop corn is gluten free according to company.

Check the local feed stores. Here, I can get 50 lb sacks of wheat, oats, barley, corn, etc. for under $15 per bag.

I wish I could by my grains from the feed store without any concerns. Unfortunately my grandson is on a gluten free diet. That makes it more difficult and expensive to stock the pantry.
