Hello from Idaho!

Hi,

Call me Brian ... I hail from one part of Idaho that is not a good place to be when the going gets rough, and we own another chunk of Idaho that IS a good place to be when the going gets rough. We, because we must, are both urban preppers and planner/preppers as we develop and add to what's on our aforementioned land - it's got an 'enhanced hunters cabin' w/wood stove and potty facilities, and storage that is hidden and locked. We are planting trees, a small orchard of such, and are starting to study the 'Forest farming' principals where forested (ours is 50% forest) land can be turned into food production land. We plan on moving to this property within 6 years, at which time (or shortly before), we'll build our more permanent home there. It is not off the grid and has both power and water available and hooked up, but we're building as though it needs to be off the grid - the house will have a basement, root cellar, underground cistern, wood heat upstairs and down, and a combo bake/cook/heat wood stove unit. Even though water is there, we will consider a hand-pump well at some point if the $$$ makes sense. The land is being developed for perennial and annual crops in addition to the forest thing mentioned above, and of course, we'll have chickens, both meat and layers (and the wife want a dwarf Nigerian goat to be milked). The land, which I will not hint about where it is, is on a dead-end and far enough away from main roads that it'll be a long walk from main travel routes if there are those that are desperate (although we fully intend to help people until it hurts). We are constitutional conservatives, fundamental Christians - no denomination, just KJV and sometimes NKJV Bibles....

Thanks for the add!

Thanks, All! I wouldn't all our hidden chunk a retreat though... it's also about lifestyle, the pleasures of a back porch, wood stove burning inside, watching the deer play (there's lots of them on our land) .... We'll just call it 'home' as soon as we can get there.... $$

 Retreat, BOL, a place with no neighbors..... call it what you will it's still a place to go when there is a need. Be it SHTF or just to much social encroachment in our lives. the value of a back porch and woodstove cannot be over looked.

Good luck with it, but it does always seem to come down the $$$$$'s doesn't it?

Oldrek ... Yup, money is a key ingredient. We'll do fine... just gotta put in a little more time until it's OK to start withdrawing retirement IRA money, SS, pensions, etc.... we'll be fine. Heck, we might retire early and just work some lower paying, yet pleasurable, job instead.... We're thinking along those lines more all the time :)

North County Guy - Great news! Happy for you. Remember those of us still stuck in the penal colony when you get to paradise.
