Re: List of Kansas CERT's

Postby itsadisaster » Fri Oct 08, 2010 12:05 am

As fyi … Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) are 1 of 5 programs under Citizen Corps. CERT members actually get trained in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations and is usually delivered in 2-1/2 hour sessions, one evening a week over a 7 week period. And several communities even have Teen CERTs.

Some other programs under Citizen Corps include Fire Corps, Medical Reserve Corps (MRCs), USAWatch (a.k.a. National Neighborhood Watch) and Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS). These programs all rely on volunteers from local communities so consider joining one in your area.

Some Affiliates and Organizations that work closely with Citizen Corps include American Radio Relay League (ARRL), The American Legion, Civil Air Patrol, Girl Scouts,, Jaycees, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) and many others.

If you don’t see a CERT posted above in your area (or if you can’t reach a CERT contact above since they do change hands sometimes), visit http://www.citizencorps.gov and search your zip code to see if there is a program near you.

And finally … check out a thread discussing Citizen Corps + various disaster/prep volunteer groups at viewtopic.php?f=106&t=4030

Unfortunately I've already talked to my county EM and there's no budget to form a CERT for my county, and they won't allow a CERT that's privately funded. About the only recourse I have would be to get together volunteers and we just buy our own equipment, pay for our own training and then offer ourselves for help if the time comes.

Hi Blaik! In case it's of interest .. FEMA's online "Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams" (IS 317) is an independent study course that serves as an introduction to CERT for those wanting to complete training or as a refresher for current team members. It has six modules: Introduction to CERT, Fire Safety, Hazardous Material and Terrorist Incidents, Disaster Medical Operations, and Search and Rescue. It takes between 6 and 8 hours to complete the course. The IS 317 can be taken by anyone interested in CERT. However, to become a CERT volunteer, one must complete classroom training offered by a local government agency such as the emergency management agency, fire or police department. http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/IS317/ . Wonder why they won't allow a privately funded CERT (??) .. weird. Hope this helps. itsa

I'm not sure why, but I think the issue comes into play that he's nervous about having a private group that would be acting 'on behalf' of the city/county. He instead referred me to local churches that have disaster relief groups. I don't think he doesn't want one, just not sure what his hang up was. I was thinking of it similar to a Volunteer FD, but more oriented to natural/unnatural disasters.

I am going to take IS 317, and will also probably try to reach out to the Douglas Co. CERT to see if I can join in on some of their training sessions. Long term I'd like to be in a position where I've taken all the courses I can to lead a CERT if need be, then reach out to the community for volunteers to train up to be part of the team, then when I actually have a team 'in place', revisit the idea and see if he's more willing to accept the idea.

Ok I see and yeah, maybe nervous about liability issues, etc and yes, local churches do have DR groups. Sadly a lot of CERT funding is drying up everywhere so hard for EMs to keep programs going. But looks like Douglas Co has an active CERT and per their site at http://www.douglas-county.com/depts/em/ ... _home.aspx .. classes start early April. Good luck and thank you all you're doing. :) itsa (Janet)
