As fyi ... Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) are 1 of 5 programs under Citizen Corps. CERT members actually get trained in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations and is usually delivered in 2-1/2 hour sessions, one evening a week over a 7 week period. Some communities offer courses no charge while others charge a small fee. And several communities even have Teen CERTs.

Some other programs under Citizen Corps include Fire Corps, Medical Reserve Corps (MRCs), USAWatch (a.k.a. National Neighborhood Watch) and Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS). These programs all rely on volunteers from local communities.

Some Affiliates and Organizations that work closely with Citizen Corps include American Radio Relay League (ARRL), The American Legion, Civil Air Patrol, Girl Scouts, Jaycees, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) and many others.

If you don’t see a CERT posted above in your area (or if you can’t reach a CERT contact above since they do change hands sometimes), visit http://www.citizencorps.gov and search your zip code to see if there is a program near you.

And finally ... check out a thread discussing Citizen Corps + various disaster/prep volunteer groups + online CERT courses at viewtopic.php?f=106&t=4030

Awesome information! Thanks for th links...

A gun is a tool, no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.

Just a quick update.

According to www.coadwi.org:

"COAD has shutdown all operations...

Unfortunately, due to recent financial difficulties the Board of Directors has decided to shut down all of COAD’s operations, discontinue our volunteer programs, and end our current fund development strategy. COAD will not dissolve completely but will instead exist only as a Board of Directors who meets on a regular basis to discuss local emergency management issues and plans.

Therefore effective immediately COAD will no longer be providing any of the core services you have come to expect including: Community Outreach and Education including CERT Training, Volunteer Management, Resource Management, and Community Planning and Recovery.

The Southeast WI Medical Reserve Corp will be merged with the Wisconsin Disaster Medical Response Team (WDMRT) MRC unit, which is housed out of the Fox Valley area. The MRC will continue to remain active in Southeastern WI and will provide support to local emergency management during exercises and emergencies/disasters under the WDMRT. Racine County also operates its own MRC unit; please contact them if you are interested in joining a local unit based in SE WI.

COAD will no longer provide CERT Training or operate a CERT Volunteer Program in Waukesha, Milwaukee, and Ozaukee Counties. Milwaukee County may provide CERT Training in the future, please contact Milwaukee County Emergency Management this summer to find out the status of CERT Training in Milwaukee. Currently Washington and Racine Counties still provide CERT Training to the public. Please contact the Southeast Wisconsin Citizen Corp in Racine or The Citizen Corp of Washington County for more information on their CERT Programs.

I have done my best to find new homes for all of our programs however it may be some time before they are operational again so please be patient.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all of COAD I want to thank you for your time, consideration, and support over the years. Though COAD’s operations are coming to an end, we are proud of the success the organization has achieved; success which was only made possible through the support of our volunteers, partners, and associates like you.

Gail and I will be working our last day this Friday, January 4th. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact us and we will do our best to get back to you. After Friday the current contact information you have for COAD will no longer be valid, you may reach out to the Board through sewicoad@gmail.com or by checking the COAD website (coadwi.org) for updates. Please keep in mind the COAD Board of Directors will not be providing any services to the public and will only meet quarterly therefore their ability to answer your correspondences will be very limited.

Thank you for your support.

Rob Kraemer
Interim Executive Director"
