Can Someone School Me on Boiler Heat?

Postby Blondie » Sat Jun 06, 2015 9:10 pm

I'm thinking of looking at a property next week but from what I'm reading it may have boiler heat.

It's in an area of all propane (no natural gas at the road) so I'm wondering what to ask about as far as heating with either a propane or wood fueled boiler? If I put in an offer it will be contingent on inspection.

I lived in an apt years ago that had a boiler, seemed to be reliable until the pump began to leak. Any random thoughts out there?

I think I would plan to install a wood stove - heat and cooking double use. We have boilers in Germany and they went out all the time.......

A down side of heating/cooking with a wood stove is that there is no "on/off" switch. I have to head out the door to work M-F so lighting up a stove and then letting it cool down so I can head out the door isn't practical.

Or am I not thinking thru this?

Your first question should be, how old is the system? Nothing wrong with using a boiler for heat, but an older system can be a constant pain in the bottom. I had one years ago that required constant attention. What is the condition of the systems plumbing and is the plumbing clean and without corrosion? Is the system properly insulated or are will you be heating the wrong places? Pay very close attention to the fuel costs and remember they can be manipulated for a quick sale. Swamp

Swamp, my guess it's original with the build, so about 25 yrs old.

You bring up a good point about the condition of the water supply & piping. Very high iron & mineral content in the water up here. There is a softener in place now.

If the pipes are full of crud, it will cost you plenty in efficiency. Swamp

:(

My first thought was to rip it out and replace with forced air. Not exactly cheap.
