I've done that, it will keep you alive but it is not the best rout. Depending on circumstances this will be a great way to loose toes and possibly your life, you have the added problem of fire. I tried it for a night just to see if it was doable, it is if you are dry and the temps are around zero but other than that there are better options. Siwawshing out should be your last option. Even if you fall through the ice and loose all your gear you should still have a hatchet or machete on your person which will give you the option of building a lean-to shelter. The advantage of a lean-to is that you can pile snow on top of it which will give you more insulation from the cold and it will reflect the heat from a fire back at you.

if you have a way to cut branches, stack them up like a bigger version of a VW bug, with the branches all facing one way. cover them with snow, pack the snow tightly, toss on some water if you can arrange a way to do so, forming a "shell". then remove the branches and you'll have a shelter. Make it big enough to have a raised "bed" of packed snow (if need be, piled up dirt is better), with debris on top to lay on. your body heat rises, the cold air goes down, and you'll be warmer. you can't have a fire in there, or it will CO kill you in your sleep, and it will melt your shelter. Have your fire outside, heating rocks and then bury the hot rocks underneath you.

That shelter with the fire under the tree reminded me of the Jack London story "To Build a Fire" wherein the subject has built a fire under a tree and the snow above melted and fell on him and extinguished his fire. Good improvised shelter but something to consider when building a fire is what is above it.
