BUGGING IN: What To Do When TSHTF and You Live In Suburbia

Postby whitebear54 » Fri Oct 13, 2017 6:19 am

Your electrical power fails due to a storm, terrorist attack, EMP or other catastrophe. Hyperinflation leads to an economic collapse and food and medical supplies stop flowing to the cities. A pandemic spreads death around the globe.

This book offers specific, practical advice and instruction, as well as general guidelines you will have to tailor to your unique circumstances, to help you keep your family as safe as possible. You will learn what to stock up on, what skills you should endeavor to acquire, and what actions you must take to give your family a chance at surviving the disaster and chaos that may strike at any time.

What if help isn’t coming? What if you have nowhere to go that is more safe and secure than your own home? What if bridges are down or highways clogged with stalled vehicles and you are forced to stay home? How would you provide for your family? How would you protect them?

If you have ever entertained those questions, this is the book for you.

Your snide comment aside, the book has a lot of excellent prepper/survival tips for anyone, no matter where they live. It just happens that most people live in cities or suburbs so the goal of the book is to teach them how to not be victims after TSHTF. But even if you live out in the country on a farm, if you are bugging in the book offers good advice. And since it's an ebook it has tons of links to sites such as this one and to top quality products that the author or his friends actually use.

Suggestion, not found in book. Replace all hinge and strike plate screws with 3 1/2" s/s deck screws.

Wouldn't do us any good, we have 11 almost floor to ceiling windows in back and a
glass door back there. If someone wants in here they can get in.

But we are in a rural area so safer then most, and back off the road. If something
happened and we didn't mow or trim house would not be as visible in awhile.

1) Do the gray man thing to minimize interest in your location
2) Network with neighbors - start to get to know them so at least you know ahead of time who you can trust, and who you cannot.
3) Opsec is increasingly critical as population density increases. Don't unload preps/bulk items/ anything that might look good to thieves, etc in front of the neighbors - if you don't have a garage, try to move interesting items after dark. Don't brandish or carry openly weaponry, high tech (of interest to thieves) items, high ticket items of any kind. Not even food. You want to give the impression of "nothing to notice here, folks"
4) Befriend the neighborhood gossip. Don't tell them anything you don't want spread about, but utilize them as a resource of information on others, and a way to disseminate Disinformation of your own.
5) Learn what improvised items can be used to enhance your security - strategically parked cars for cover/concealment; compost heap (preferably fresh & nasty) hiding cached items; edible landscaping that others in the neighborhood will NOT recognize (amaranth plants, ornamental cabbage, serviceberry bushes, etc)
6) Be sure to openly gripe about the same things as the neighbors - it builds unity and distracts those who might choose to vent their spleen on someone 'different' (like the only Republican in a Democrat neighborhood).
New laws are like new taxes....both evolve, but they never go away.

Pretty good suggestions, but once you get to know your neighbors (and which ones you'd want in your mutual assistance group) invite them to a "block party" and show off your solar system, gardens, aquaponics setup, chickens and rabbits and encourage them to set up such systems of their own. Educate them (without lecturing) about how Prepping is just another form of insurance. The more of them who buy in, the more valuable they will be to your group.

Anyone in a suburban living situation who thinks they can Bug In as a lone wolf will die. You NEED a community effort when TSHTF and the more veterans you have in your group the better.

I put burglar bars on all the windows and iron gates on the doors. It should slow them down enough to aim! Living in a secluded area has it drawbacks! Help will arrive in time to call the coroner, provided there is anyone able to call.

A few years ago a friend was knocked senseless while checking out a noise, tied up, and they spent several hours loading up the truck. So much for seclusion being a safety factor!

From your posts we have a similar problem! Not getting any younger, live in a secluded place, and have the nicest home around! There are no secrets in a small town! Swamp
People rarely notice what it right in front of their eyes. The Da Vinci Code

I have lived in places where that would simply insure they kill you first.
Of course, that was in Austin TX

Other than that, all good suggestions, except I would say do loading and unloading of supplies "before sunrise" rather than "after dark."
Calling Islam a religion isn't much different than calling Nazism or Communism a religion.
Both were also political movements with a religious component, just like Islam.

little over the top - wayyyyyyy more than you could ever expect to get out of most neighborhoods - but the basics are there and it is what you should be shooting for in a serious SHTF - where life & limb are in question ....
