Vinegar

Postby Permafrost » Sun Nov 05, 2017 2:36 am

So I am in town, and I figured I would catch up on some housekeeping issues since I'm here. I was going through our storage area and I found some expired jugs of vinegar. I am not the biggest believer in expiration dates, but these are like 10 years past the dates on them. I know vinegar does not technically go bad because of the acidity in it, but it will get cloudy and taste "off". Has anyone tried pickling with old vinegar? The stuff always tastes off to me, but it does not appear to be cloudy. I was going to sweet pickle & can some of my carrots, but I am wondering if I should toss this stuff out & just go buy some new stuff.

I cannot help you on using it to can with. Don't throw it out use it to clean your house. It is supposed to work on cleaning bathrooms and such.

wouldn't take the chance on ruining the food - buy new - vinegar has a long shelf life but I would be rotating it out ... use the old vinegar for some rust removal or some of the other useful purposes it can serve ....

Use the cloudy bits to start a new "mother" for vinegar from fresh squeezed apple juice.

If only we had a supply of apples here. I have tried many times to grow them but it has not happened.

if you give the apple seedlings a try again - check into species from Upper MI or NY - the usual from WA won't make it with your climate ....

Make malt vinegar from un-hopped beer. Told to me just today by a friend.
