Nice article Illini. Yes we know what a ringer is, learned it from our parents/grandparents. We have a lot of cast iron skillets and dutch ovens. Some of them are grizwold that my wife or I got from our parents that got them from their parents.

I use nothing but a cast iron dutch oven in the sun oven, pre-heats faster, holds the heat longer and cooks a lot faster.

Had no idea....Excellent share Illini...

Checking it out, it was $18 on Amazon...Down in the "Customers also bought" area I saw this one....Might be worth the look but I really have no idea.

900 reviews---4.5 stars----Bigger----Less expensive.

Driven, are you sure you are from Kalifornia? You make a lot of sense.

I followed the Amazon links also - smaller copies of the ringers at below $10 - could save a few bucks with one of those ....

Thanks for the post Illini, I have never seen one of these before. I have some cast iron that has been handed down since the gold rush and I have always just washed it with Dawn like my grandma did. I got a new pan two years ago and it was a wake up call, it is much different caring for new cast iron that does not have over a century of seasoning in the metal. I think I'll have to get one of these and start using my new pan more often, because all I do with it now is use it to render bear fat to try to really get the seasoning in the metal.

Interesting article. Never heard of a "ringer" before. I've been cooking with cast iron for decades. One of my pans, I got from my mother, who got it from HER mother. It's the one I probably use the most--almost every day, in fact. I also have a small Wagner sauté pan--it was a swap meet find...one of 3 cast iron pans I got for $15 (for all 3 of them.)
