Just curious, how many people are starting their gardens from seeds they saved from last year?

I start mine from seed from previous year:

Tomatoe: Giant Belgium and Italian Giant Beefsteak

Peppers: Napoleon Sweet and Ozark Giant

Cucumber: Suyo Long

Hot Pepper: Bulgarian

Cantelope: Can't remember the name.

These are all heiloom seed, been using them now for about 15 years.

I too use seeds I have saved for pumpkin. butte cup and butternut squash, zucchini, yellow summer squash and pat-a-pan squash. I will not start the plants until the middle of April. Planting season does not start until after Memorial day.

I have saved seeds from some plants, but most have failed.

I started a lemon tree and a lime tree from seeds from fruit I bought at Walmart. The lemon tree is about 2 feet tall, and the 3rd lime tree is about 2 inches tall (the first 2 were eaten by the cat when they were about 6 inches tall). :x

I also started Rainier cherry seeds - they were a no go. Online information is confusing concerning them - someone suggested keeping the seeds frozen for a season to simulate winter, so I took half the seeds, froze them in the freezer, and planted them last spring. I took the others, planted them in a pot, and left them out all winter. Neither set germinated. I will try again this year when the cherries are available in stores again. I have to get Rainier and another type of cherry - they have to be cross pollinated.

Or I may just cave and buy the plants. :) :D

We do not plant saved seeds - yet. The only seeds I have saved are for Seminole squash and we will be planting those. We are going to try planting them in various places on the property to see if they will grow wild.

We hope to save some seeds this year though for next year.

I am, but just a few things saved from a smaller garden this past season; jalapeno peppers, lemon balm, and perila.

I also have some old seeds from a seed exchange I may try out.

The rest of the direct sow or raised to transplant will be older stored seeds or newly purchased seed packets.

One thing to remember about saving seeds, if the seed is from a hybird plant, it's hit or miss to grow anything. If the seed is from a heirloom plant, you have a 99% chance of getting a plant.

Look at all the seed vaults sold in survival stores/catelogs, they are all heirloom seeds.

Yep, good call out on heirloom seeds. I do have heirloom seeds from seed vault packages, but for now I'm saving most of them for the rainiest of days. This year I'm interested to see how I do with randomly saved seeds, open packages leftover from previous seasons, etc. just to see what sprouts and what I can keep alive to transplant-able seedlings.

I do a few every year and mix in new...Never tried 100 % reclaimed seeds for an entire garden.

Being in zone 9a there are so many I can plant I'm always trying new varieties and types.

Right now only a few things. Some tomatoes, squash, cotton, peanuts, a blue corn, and beans. Hoping for more types this year.

Husband has been watering the lime tree because it's in the room his computer is in...I had to do something, and went in...there's a second lime tree growing! It's about 1/2 inch high. I hope it makes it!

FYI - our Walmart has their seeds and potting soil out already...

Every year. I haven't bought tomato seeds in I don't know how long. Squash I save, but I bought a whole bunch of new types last year...same goes for beans and peppers.

Pole beans, for the last seven years as the beans die back, i pick the last of the pods and dry them in a pillow case. A few good whacks and the beans separate. Good for toxin free soup and organic seed. I don't spray any pesticides on my crops. Yeah, I lose some but I'm not eating chemicals. Wood ash works wonders so does DE and chickens (chickens need to be watched, they are very destructive).

Part of my garden is started from saved seed, and some is from seed I bought...usually when I want to "experiment" with a new variety, or something I haven't tried to grow before.

Well I must have been living under a rock. I was out shopping today and found that Dollar Tree had seed packs at 4/dollar. And they had heirlooms so I bought a whole bunch. Still planning to plant some from saved seeds, but this made my day.
