A couple with a 14-yo boy has moved in across the street; they’re living with the neighbor for free. The father is quite the AH and is verbally abusive to the boy, very controlling, very self-centered. The father has 8 kids, this is the youngest. He’s avoided paying any child support for many years by living as an “invisible man”. His oldest son committed suicide about 2 months ago, and now the young boy is talking about doing the same.

I spoke with the boy’s stepmother, and she said that he isn’t doing well in the new school. His reading is poor, but he’s bright. She would help him if she knew how. The only income they have is what she makes PT at Walmart, so they don’t have much.

That’s the background, here’s the question: Is there such a thing as a one-book source of the basics of phonics? 26 letters and 40-some sounds shouldn’t be all that difficult.

But it can’t be computerized, it can’t be electronic in any form, they don’t have the toys.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great.
