• We have a Davis Vantage Vue, we are happy with it but it was about $260. It is tied into wifi though so it or electric goes down it does. It has a battery backup that will run for awhile but still needs wifi.

I bought one for our son for Christmas and it has most of the features and was a little over a $100, he is quite happy with it.

    We like…[Read more]

  • I am making progress with food storage. I now have 71 containers of corn in the freezer. Yesterday I put up 18 pint and a half containers of peaches, 6 quart freezer containers, then canned 7 quarts. My small freezer is full of strawberries, peaches, and corn. I added 3 quarts of blackberries today, I want more but not at $4.50 a quart and…[Read more]

    • I canned 2 bushels of peaches one year – pie filling, plain peaches, and peach jam. We just didn’t eat it as fast as I thought we would. 6-8 years later, still had a lot of that stuff left. We cleaned it out of the LTS and just got rid of it. It wasn’t bad, just lost a lot of nutritional value and had turned a dark, unappetizing color. So off it…[Read more]

  • I’m excited got my relish, carrots, and B & B pickles canned. 18 pints of pickles 23 pints of relish, not sure how many of carrots.

Hubs cracked the radius in his arm so not going to be able to help much for awhile, back to doc in 2 weeks. I painted 12 shutters today he had taken down. Going to see if I can put them back up, they were very sun…[Read more]

  • I got the sewing machine for $225. Hubs approved, I found you can get parts and supplies for it even though its old. 1963 industrial Singer 188k1. I ordered needles, special thread in white, black, tan, and navy, bobbins, 1 new bobbin case for it. These old ones have all steel parts and will likely be good when I’m gone. Hubs is going to put on…[Read more]

  • I just finished preparing corn for the freezer. Today was my last batch, I have 71 containers of corn and I’m done for this year. Hubs helped shuck and I prepped, took a couple of hitches to get it done. Have up 23 pints of relish, a lot of work but we use a lot of it. I’m thinking of putting up at least 7 more. I put it in potato and…[Read more]

  • It’s ok right now. However the tax cuts only spurred stockholder buy backs for big business an some 1 time bonuses. I don’t know of anyone that got more money. Interest rates are now rising, gas is rising, the cost of everything is going to go up if these tariffs stay in place. The trillion dollar tax cut is going to hurt in many ways as…[Read more]

Linda, I am the only other one here that is considered a liberal, however, I consider myself a moderate. It’s been rough here but I hung in for the information. There are some good ideas here, so good luck. I’m not fond of the new format, but hope it will improve, guess time will tell.

  • We are retired that means fixed income. So we sold our rentals in Texas and bought new ones up here. We are doing ok, we have 1 more to put in service, hope to by year end, but until we get it rented at times it gets tight. But now we have a renter moving too, sooo. We will have 7 altogether, lots of money going out, only 1 is guaranteed, I…[Read more]

  • This seems to be the only place where anything new is being posted. I know the forum needed redone but I think you have lost most of the followers. I know I was seldom welcomed but I was interested and learned some from here. Will continue to check in periodically but think I need to find another active forum. Sorry to see this happen.

    • Oh, don’t give up PatrioticStabilist, it’ll get better.

I did like the old forum like so many others but I’m sticking with the APN.

One thing to remember, it’s free, it’s got good information and it’s got alot of good people on here.

    • When APN started on the new forum back in what…well, many years ago, after we’d been a Yahoo email group, we had the same kind of growing pains.

The new forum is different, and they’re still working on it, I think.

But this is one of the few places on the internet where you can find all the info you need and can talk with people who think as…[Read more]

    • I know your pain Rick. I’m still having trouble and am missing so many of the old posts which really have the meat of the prepping info in them. The new format is not even close to the old format and very difficult to navigate.

  • By the way and yes it just became legal in Indiana. I started taking hemp oil to help with my bad foot and reduce the other meds I’m taking. Trying to completely alleviate hydrocodone, I don’t take much but want none, my doc told me not to drop my pain management doc yet as she likely can’t get me back in. I know this is not supposed to have…[Read more]

  • I keep thinking what if this was all the food I was going to have and one year the crops didn’t do well. Malnutrition or starvation I guess. No strawberries here to put up this year because of weather, worrisome.

  • My garden was looking good, but this heat is taking a toll. We have had rain but like this morning, my bokchoy was beautiful. By afternoon with it in the 90’s it was dead. I bought 4 replacement tomato plants as my others don’t look really great. Some things are doing fine, green beans, squash, zucchini, onions, melons, peppers. Turnips and…[Read more]

  • My garden is all up except for potatoes. I have tilled, weeded, fertilized and watered a couple of times already. Have my new canner, jars of any very old food emptied and washed. Tattle lids, not sure if I will buy more, but these will be great.

Went fishing today, got a 20 in, 19 inc, and smaller catfish and cleaned them. I got to hot or…[Read more]

  • I am going through my canned goods. I had some beets from 2013, they taste ok but just don’t want to eat them, so dumped them. I have several jars of chow chow from 2016, none of us liked so dumping that and some banana peppers that were very soft so got rid of those. I am getting jars ready to start canning again. We are eating up the other…[Read more]

  • I don’t know if its going to help me but I’m trying to find a substitute for arthrotec and hydrocodone. I’m allowed 3 hydrocodones a day but take just 1 most of the time and never more then 2. I do not want to become dependent on them. Now in Indiana pain management is trying to push you out of the program. And doctors are being threatened…[Read more]

Left off cabbages and intend to plant carrots too.

Bought 3 5 gallon bottles of water today. I use these in my dispenser, have regular bottles stored away and canned water. I would be leery of the water in the plastic bottles to drink but it has uses.

Got 4 bags of watersoftener salt, could use for other things if needed.

I am planting. Hubs had to help me this year, he plowed, disked, and…[Read more]

Hubs is plowing and disking my garden today, I found a place with less expensive plants but with ones for my flowerbeds and my garden it was $100 but I got a lot of them.

I have seed potatoes just for eating quit trying to keep them. With heat in the basement doesn’t work for them or onions, so both just enough for canning. I use the onions in…[Read more]

  • PatrioticStabilist replied to the topic Canning water in the forum Pressure Canners 3 years ago

I can it all the time, if I can’t fill my canner in goes a quart or pint of water, mainly quarts though. I have opened some and it actually tastes better then it does from the tap. I just can it for whatever time the product I doing at the time requires.

I am thinking with the new big canner I may do some gallon jugs of water in it or half gallon.

  • I’m so excited, think it is coming tomorrow, got an email about a delivery don’t think anything else is pending. But I order tons online.
So will have my canner and a large quantity of tattler lids, got the big mouth ones. I would like to order the smaller ones but have spent enough money for now. Maybe I can get them before canning season starts.
